The Devon Open 2010 was held at Honiton Golf Club on Sunday 29th
August. A total of 38 of the top Professionals and Amateurs in Devon
played around a golf course in excellent condition, although a stiff
breeze and scattered showers made the scoring difficult.
After the morning round, Harrison Greenbury, a +1 handicapped junior
from Exeter Golf Club and defending champion Chris Gill, also Exeter
Golf Club were tied on one over par 70 and took a 2 shot lead over
Robin Goodey from Downes Crediton and home player James Pickard,
playing in his last amateur event before turning Professional next
week.
In the afternoon round the
scoring improved and a shared best of the day 69 was enough for
Paul Hendriksen (Churston) to take fourth
place on 144 and 2nd place in the Professional’s Prize.
Harrison Greenbury scored a second round 72 to add to his first
round of 70 to finish in third place on 142, the same score as Ryan
Pope (Exeter) who shot a fantastic second round of 69 to follow a
73 in the morning which meant that Ryan Pope took the first prize
in the amateur competition and the Rowbottom Trophy on count back
and 2nd place in the Devon Open..
Both Harrison and Ryan came
up one shot short of defending champion Chris Gill, who shot a
71 to add to his first round 70 to finish
on 141 for a one shot victory over both Exeter juniors. This was
the third year in a row that Gill has won the Devon Open and the
event finished with Exeter holding the first three places in this
year’s event.
The Devon Alliance Secretary thanked Honiton Golf Club for hosting
the event, especially the green keepers for producing a golf course
in outstanding condition, all the bar and catering staff and Adrian
Cave and James Pickard in the Pro Shop for their assistance in running
the event.
The first event of upcoming Alliance season is the Professional
Invitation Day at Okehampton Golf Club on Thursday 23rd September
2010 and will look forward to seeing you then.
