The first Devon Alliance event of the 2010/2011 season was held on Thursday 23rd September at Okehampton Golf Club. The format was a 4 man team event (1 Professional and 3 amateurs) with 2 scores to count and was a fun way to start the current Alliance year.

It was the first time in four years that the Devon Alliance has visited Okehampton Golf Club and the course was in fantastic condition, and even though there was over an inch of rain in the night, the greens were very fast and true.

There was an excellent field of 84 players and the event was very close, with 7 teams within 2 points at the top of the leader board. There were 3 teams tied on 83 points (11 under par) and the top 3 places were decided on count back. The winning team on the day was Elfordleigh Professional Nick Cook along with his amateur partners Andy Clegg, Darren Tallen and Damien Lidstone.

The Elfordleigh team’s back nine score of 43 points was enough to beat the Alliance President, Martin Ruth and his team by 1 point on count back. Martin Ruth, Head Professional at Torquay Golf Club and his amateurs partners of Colin Nolan, P Lewis and T Bastow won second prize courtesy of 42 back nine points to push the other Torquay team of Professional Tom Hiscock, P Jeffrey, M Jeffrey and R Daw down to third place.

The Devon Alliance Captain Duncan Arnold thanked Okehampton Golf Club’s Captain Mike Chilsworth for hosting the event and producing a golf course in such fine condition. He also thanked Ashley Moon and his staff in the pro-shop, Okehampton’s secretary Bev for being starter for the day and Val and all her staff in the bar and catering department for the superb food after the round.

The second event of the Alliance season is the season’s first Kenyon event at Torquay Golf Club on Thursday 14th October 2010 and I will look forward to seeing you then.
