The Leisure Engineering
Devon Alliance at Yelverton Golf Club was the third Devon Alliance
of the season. A field of 124 players had
a fantastic day and was the largest Devon Alliance entry for many
years. Yelverton Golf Club is always one of the most popular venues
in Devon
and the golf course was in fantastic condition. There was a stiff
breeze to test the players but the scoring was exceptional.
The
best score of the day was an outstanding 41 points from Okehampton
Head Professional Ashley
Moon. Moon’s 5 under par round was enough
to win by 3 shots from Honiton’s new professional James Pickard
on 38 points, with Downes Crediton’s Professional Barry Austin
a shot further back on 37 points.
In the Pro-Am team event, it was again Moon who was top of the leader
board with his amateur partner Lee Pengelley with 45 points. The Okehampton
team won by one point from Saunton Professional Albert MacKenzie and
his partner Charlie West. The Hele Park pairing of Ben Martin and Steve
Bristow came in third place on 43 points.
The
Am-Am scoring was also very good with the Churston family pairing
of Chester and Lester Barnes winning the event on 44 points. This
was enough for a two-point victory over new Alliance members Nick
Jewell
(Staddon) and Wayne Tulley (Boringdon) on 42 points.
The Devon Alliance Captain Duncan Arnold thanked Yelverton Golf Club
for the warm welcome the Alliance received and thanked Steve West,
the General Manager at Yelverton Golf Club for all his help on the
day. Duncan also thanked Steve Dougan in the Pro Shop, starter of the
day Tony Rushbrook, George Pitts and all the green keeping staff for
producing a golf course in exceptional condition and also thanked Keith
and Debbie Parriss and all the bar and catering staff for the fantastic
food and service all the Alliance members received on the day.
The
Devon Alliance would like to thank the events sponsor Leisure Engineering
and Yelverton
Golf Club’s Club Captain Bill Hammett,
who has been a member of the Devon Alliance for over thirty years,
for his continued support of the Devon Alliance. The event was followed
with the Alliance’s AGM and this was Duncan Arnold’s
final event as Captain. Duncan has been a fantastic Captain and the
Devon
Alliance would like to thank Duncan for all his hard work and support
during his very successful year.
The new Devon Alliance Captain is Stuart Disney from Padbrook Park
and Stuart introduced his Vice Captain Dan Wood, the Head Professional
at Holsworthy Golf Club. Stuart said it was an honour to become Devon
Alliance Captain after 22 years as a Professional and looked forward
to his year in office.
The next event of Alliance season is at East Devon Golf Club on Thursday
11th November 2010 and I will look forward to seeing you then.
