Devon Open
Woodbury Park
Golf Club
Sunday 18th September 2011
The Devon Open was held on Sunday 18th September 2011 at Woodbury Park
Golf Club. Woodbury is one of the finest golfing venues in South West
England and the Devon Open was played off the Golf tees measuring 6,800
yards. 25 Professionals and 35 Amateurs competed on a testing golf course
in fine condition. The weather was wet and windy and the scoring was
fantastic considering the difficult conditions.
After heavy rain in the morning round, it was East Devon amateur
David Blick who was leading with a fantastic four under par 69.
This was enough
for a 1 shot lead over home player Tom Jessamine and Teignmouth’s
Billy Hemstock. Royal North Devon’s Jimmy Mullen, Paul Hendriksen
(Dinnaton) and Barry Austin (Crediton) were one shot further back
after 2 under par rounds of 71.
The afternoon round remained mainly dry, but the breeze strengthened
and offered a different challenge to the morning play. It was Hele Park
Professional Ben Martin who shot the best round of the afternoon. Ben
shot a 69 (-4) for a 36 hole total of five under par 141. His 141 total
was matched by Billy Hemstock who added a 2nd round 71 to his morning
round of 70 and this meant a two way play off.
The 18th hole at Woodbury – a 170 yard Par 3 with water in
front is a fantastic play-off hole and both players hit the green
with their
tee shots. Martin two putted for his par 3 and it left Hemstock
to hole a 15 foot putt for a birdie 2 and clinched the Devon Open.
In joint third place was Jimmy Mullen, who finished as best amateur shooting
a second successive 71 to finish on 142, alongside Barry Austin, who
also shot 2 successive rounds of 71.
Devon Alliance Captain Stuart Disney thanked Woodbury Golf Club for hosting
the day, especially the greenkeeping team and the entire bar and catering
team. He also thanked the Pro shop team for their assistance in organising
and running of the event.
