Royal North Devon
Golf Club Pros Individual Pro/Am
On a links course where normally there is some form of wind the weather was unusually benign with barely a breeze. This did not stop the course posing a tough test though, with greens running fast and some tough pin positions, meaning shot making of the highest quality was required. The Golfer who dominated the day was ‘Big Hitting’ Okehampton Professional Ashley Moon. Ashley, who throughout the winter Devon events is one of the most consistent performers, always shines when courses play tough and the greens are quick. In the Professional Individual Moon played from tee to green as well as he has all year. Driving the ball long and straight and having total control over his iron play he put together a fine score of 39 points, 3 under par, which included a run of three birdies on 7,8 and 9. The only disappointments came with 2 bogies caused by errant chip shots that stopped him scoring the 5 or 6 under he felt his game deserved. His 39 points was enough to give him a 2 shot victory over the promising young Professional from Hele Park, left handed, Ben Martin. The Pro/Am event saw Moon again take the spoils with his partner Colin Sturgess. With Moon not making many mistakes Colin played his part where necessary holing crucial putts in the middle of the round to keep the momentum going eventually leading to a team score of 42 points, 6 under par. Again like Moon in the Individual they felt there score was one or two shy of what they expected when standing on the 15th tee 7 under with four holes to play and only finishing on 6 under. It did not matter though as it was still enough to give them a 1 stroke victory over ever improving home Professional Dan Wood and partner Shaun Loze. The Am/Am saw James Warwick team up with fellow
Chuston member Terry Lee to to post the score of the day, 43 points
( 7 under par) and win
his second event in succession. Two handicap Warick and Lee played
some magnificent golf winning by a massive 4 shots over second place
Honiton pair Simon Martin & Paul Hill.
