The
sixth Devon Alliance event of the 2009/2010 season was the Saunton
2 day festival. There was a fantastic field of 112 players who
travelled the long trip to North Devon to play 36 holes at two of
the best golf
courses in the South West.
On the first day the Alliance members played around the challenging
West course. The West course was in fantastic condition and although
it was very breezy the standard of golf was very high.
Churston’s
Paul Hendriksen shot the best score of the day with an unbelievable
score of seven under par score (43
points). This
was enough to take a six shots lead over Barry Austin of Crediton
who shot
37 points. In the Pro-Am event Paul Hendriksen was also leading
with partner Chris Coles with 44 points. In the Am-Am event,
Elfordleigh pair of Nick Tedesco and Darren Tallen with 40 points.
The
second day on the East course, the weather was more favourable than
the first day and the East course was also in
superb condition.
As expected from the first day, Paul Hendriksen won the Kenyon
with a combined score of 77 points. Paul added 34 points to his
43 points
to win by six shots from Chris Gill (71 points). Chris shot
the best of the day score of 37 points around the East course to
add
to his
first day efforts of 34 points. In third place was Crediton’s
Barry Austin with a combined score of 67 points.
In the Pro-Am event it was unbelievably close with the top 5 pairs
being separated by only 1 shot and in the end there was a three-way
tie at the top. Paul Hendriksen and Chris Coles (Churston), Chris Gill
(Exeter) and his partner Bill Hammett (Yelverton) and Crediton pair
Barry Austin and Dave Slee all shared the honours. All three pairs
scored 79 points over the two days and won by 1 shot from Nick Cook
(Elfordleigh) and his partner Damien Lidstone (Yelverton) and the home
partnership of Andy Knight and John Carlo of Saunton.
In the
Am-Am event, a fantastic second day score of 42 points from Simon
Bawden and Simon Knapman of Churston was
enough to win the
Am-Am event with 78 points. The two Simon’s won by 1 shot
from Tavistock pair of Graham Ruth and Mike Beveridge (77 points)
and
in third place
was first day leaders Nick Tedesco and Darren Tallen with 76 points.
I would
like to say a big thank you to Saunton Golf Club for a fantastic
event. Both the golf courses were immaculate and the food was outstanding.
Thanks especially to General Manager Peter McMullen, Albert MacKenzie
and all the Pro Shop staff and Tony Webb and all his staff within
the
bar and catering department.
The
Devon Alliance look forward to next year’s
event and the next Alliance event is on Thursday 18th February
at Wrangaton Golf
Club. I look forward to seeing you all there.
