Thursday 19th March saw a strong field of over 60 Professionals and Amateur
members of the Devon Professional Golfers Alliance grace the greens of Tavistock
Golf Club.
The moorland course was in beautiful condition as always but strong winds,
quick greens and tough pin positions made for a real test.
The Golfer who dominated the day making it back to back
victories was ‘Big
Hitting’ Okehampton Professional Ashley Moon. Ashley, who throughout
the winter Devon events is one of the most consistent performers, always shines
when courses play tough and the greens are quick. Upon completing his round
of 2 under par 38 points that included 4 birdies and 2 bogies, Ashley believed
that his round was not good enough to claim top spot and was quoted “ A
low one was on” little did he know that the low one would be his!!! The
only thing that let Ashley down was a couple of 3 putts. Second place went
to the ever consistent veteran Neil Holman who finished one adrift on 37 points.
The Pro/Am event saw Sean Mason of Exeter Golf & CC
and Andy Burnham, an amateur at Teignmouth claim top spot with a fine score
of 42 points, 6 under
par. Mason who gained late entry into the event after losing in the 3rd round
of the Sunningdale Foursomes by his own admission played poorly, the star of
the day was his partner Andy who was only 4 over par himself for the round
picking up the majority of their stokes in the tough conditions. Second place
went to the Hele Park Pairing of Professional Ben Martin and amateur Partner
Neil Vaughan. Bens dedication for golf has really started to produce some good
scores over the winter series.
The Am/Am saw players used to strong wind and running conditions come to the
fore. Home pair Mike White and Pete Leverton won the event shooting a better
ball score of 2 under par 38 points, this was the only score to break par for
the day and enough for a three shot victory over second place Saunton pair,
Charlie West and Morris Hastings who shot a better ball score of 35 points
.
At the presentation Barry Austin, the Alliance Captain, thanked Tavistock
Golf Club for their hospitality and captain, Tim Hawkins for the use of their
beautiful golf course, a long with the days Sponsor Renwicks Peugeot of Plymouth.
