43 points Am/Am 1st Simon Knapman & Tom
Holland Churston GC 41 points Thursday 2nd October saw the start of the new Devon Professional Golfers Alliance season at the beautiful Torquay Golf Club. A strong field of Professionals and Amateurs turned out on a dry cool day with the Torquay parkland course in fine condition but the stiff breeze and tough pin positions making for difficult scoring, especially in the Professional Individual. The professional Individual for the day was jointly won by Jon Axford from Teignmouth and Barry Austin , Head Professional at Downes Crediton with 34 points. Axford who is a new face to the professional ranks, only changing his status 3 weeks ago, has made a good start to his new career. The former +1 handicap from Teignmouth felt the key to his round were two lengthy putts holed late on in the round. A putt of 40feet on the 14th for par and a 20 foot putt for birdie on 15 meant he kept his score ticking over, ending with a two over 34 points. Tied 1st on 34 points Austin felt he had an ‘ if only day.’ He drove the ball well but couldn’t take advantage of this, unable to hit his wedges close, and only making two birdies in his round. Tied 3rd, behind Axford & Austin on 32 points were Churston Professionals Dan Leins and Dan Hendriksen. The Pro/Am event saw the Amateurs have a big impact on the team scoring. The winning pair Professional Ross Troake and partner Ted Kimpton of Exminster had a tremendous score of 7 under par 43 points. Kimpton was probably the player of the day shooting very close to par himself meaning gross and nett birdies were coming thick and fast with Troake holding the score together when required. Their 43 points gave them a one shot victory over Crediton pair Barry Austin & Mark Dunsford. Again like the winners ,amateur partner Dusford, did most of the scoring making 5 nett birdies on his 6 shot holes in their 6 under par total. There was a tie for 3rd place on 41 points going to Tavistock pair Dominic Rehagg & Malcolm Beveridge and Dan Leins & Terry Lee of Churston. The Am/Am section was won by Chuston pair Simon Knapman & Tom Holland. They put together a fine betterball score of 41 points. Simon Knapman was the main scoring force in the partnership but well backed up by Holland. Knapman ,playing off a 5 handiap, had five gross birdies in his round. The pick of the bunch came at the uphill 14th where a booming drive left him only 70 yards in which he dispatched to 3 feet for a birdie 3 nett eagle. Second place, two points behind the winners were Okehampton pair Colin Sturgess & Graham Moysey and a further point behind in 3rd place came Paul Skidmore & Richard Reid also of Okehampton. At the presentation, Alliance Captain, Mike Cayliss of Dainton Park thanked Torquay Golf Club for their hospitality and the use of their wonderful course and event sponsors Devon County Windows for their support. At the AGM after the presentation Mike Cayliss was congratulated on
his fine year as Captain of the Devon Professional Golfers Alliance
and handed over Captaincy to Barry Austin of Downes Crediton GC.
