Thursday
4th of December saw a strong field from the Devon Professional Golfers
Alliance visit the links course of the Warren Golf club for
their
Annual Greensomes Competition. Despite
the torrential rain of nights previous the course was in great condition
and as always the greens putted fast and true with just a
mild
south westerly breeze blowing across the links.
The
Pro/Am competition was won by Exeter Golf & Country
Club pair
Professional Chris Gill and Amateur Andy Rockey with a fine score of
5 under
par. The Greensomes format which means both players hit a tee shot
then play
alternate shots from the tee shot they choose was played beautifully
by the
Exeter pair. Their game plan of using Andy Rockey's strong part of
his game, the tee shot, as often as possible meant Gill could
use all his skill and
ability to craft some wonderful approach shots to some tricky flag
positions. Not least of these was an arrow like six iron on the formidable
18th hole, out of bounds left and railway line right, which never left
the
flag and came to rest 6 inches from the hole. This birdie added to
others at
1, 5 and 7 along with a number of crucial putts holed from Andy
Rockey was
the base for their emphatic 3 shot victory. Coming
home in joint second place were Churston Professional Rob Butterworth
and partner Terry Lee and Royal North Devon Assistant Dan Wood, who
has
been showing fine form over the Winter months, with partner John Baker.
Both
pairs were very pleased with their scores of 2 under par on not the
easiest
of days.
The Am/Am side of the tournament was very much of a Tavistock affair,
making
the most of their familiarity with playing shots and chips from tight
lies,
with two pairs scoring 1 over par. The pair who came out on top were
Pete
Leverton & Brian Alford winning on a better back nine from Graham
Dennis & Malcolm Beveridge. Following on in
3rd place were Teignmouth duo, Keith
Mason and Mark Haskell 2 shots further back on 3 over par.
At he
presentation Alliance Captain, Barry Austin, thanked The Warren Golf
Club for their hospitality and the use of their wonderful course and
Course
Manager, Jon Welsford, and staff for the beautifully turned out course.
