Barry Austin - Second Place

On a beautiful day for golf 30 teams from all over Devon gathered at Dainton Park this Monday. The Junior Pro Am was the `brain child` of Teign Valley head Professional Scott Amiet who has helped make the event one of the highlights of the Devon PGA season. Main sponsor of the day's event was Pat Masterson from Newton Abbot Racecourse whose son and daughter also played in the event.

The golf course was in superb condition and has matured over recent years to become one of the best tests of golf in south Devon. There was a great atmosphere around the club house throughout the day with some of the best junior golfer's teaming up with the top Pro's in the County.

Winning professional score on the day was Exeter's Chris Gill who scored a superb five under par 66. Chris played his usual solid tee to green game but felt that his score could even have been a couple better, having managed to take six on the par five 3rd hole after going in with only a mid iron. He holed out well from short range and is pleased with his overall game coming into this important part of the season.

In second place with a score of 67 was Barry Austin from Downes Crediton. Barry has just hit a fine spell of golf, he feels back to his very best form, and is very comfortable with his swing, seeing all his shots with a very controllable left to right ball flight much like Colin Montgomerie when he is at his best. Barry also brought in the winning team with a superb score of 18 under par, his team included his son Dan Austin who also won a nearest the pin prize on the 8th.

In second and third place were local Dainton Park teams lead by head professional Jason Fullard and his assistant James Jewell. Dainton has a thriving junior section and the excellent facilities at the club, including the driving range, are an ideal place to learn the game.

There was also an after tournament putting championship for the junior competitors. This was won by Ed (Sweatband) Jenkins from Portmore Golf Club. The putting was organised by Sean Mason from Teign Valley who also played well, scoring 69 on the day to finish third in the Pro individual.

Devon PGA vice captain Iain Parker from Royal North Devon thanked everybody at Dainton for supporting and staging the event particularly club owner David Wood and looked forward to next year's event.
