Carlyon Bay professional
Paul Turpin crossed the border to compete in Padbrook Park’s
annual Pro-Am. This is a very popular event with the Devon Pros,
which each year goes from strength to strength. Padbrook was
as usual in superb condition and the overall facilities at this
progressive club are among the best in the county.
Turpin who plays most of his golf in Cornwall enjoys occasional forays across
the border and played superbly to compile his score of 65. Although Padbrook
is not a long course in yardage it none the less has many testing holes and
tight tee shots, where careful placement is rewarded.
Paul drove the ball well, and holed his share of putts, and was delighted to
upstage his many friends among the Devon pro's.
In second place was Downes Crediton professional Barry Austin. Barry missed
a number of short birdie opportunities and felt his score of 67 could have
been better. In third place on a score of 69 was Devon PGA chairman Cliff Strange
and Stuart Barrett from Dartmouth golf club.
Five players matched par (70). Iain Parker (Royal North Devon), Ashley Moon
(Okehampton), Jon Langmead (Exminster), Nick Cook (Elfordleigh) and Duncan
Arnold (Hele Park).
Padbrook owner Gary Scargill thanked everybody who supported the event and
looks forward to next year. Devon PGA Captain Ashley Moon thanked everybody
at Padbrook and commented on the great atmosphere around the Clubhouse.
Parker thanked everybody at Churston particularly Head Pro at Churston
Rob Butterworth and his team for organising a superb event. He also
thanked club
secretary Simon Bawden for his efforts, and he looked forward to returning
next year.
