The Devon PGA gathered at an immaculate Churston Golf Club last Friday
for their annual Pro Am competition. The weather on the day was sunny
and warm, but with a strong wind, and the usual tough pin placements.
This meant that the golf course was going to present a stiff challenge
to the Counties best Pro`s.
Head greenkeeper Kelvin Miller should be very proud of his work at
Churston, the Professionals were unanimous in their praise commenting
that `The condition and presentation was the best they had seen all
season.`
The day produced one of the `rounds of the season` a 64 by West Region
player of the year Chris Gill from Exeter Golf and Country Club.
Even on a tough scoring day, Chris can make the game look ridiculously
easy. He said when asked how he achieved his score `I just played
nicely and aimed to keep the ball below the hole and give myself
uphill chances for birdie` This comment just shows the level of control
he is currently playing with . His scoring average for the season
is hovering around the 66 mark and if he can keep this sort of form,
and self belief into next months second stage of `tour qualifying
school` he could be on his way to his long held ambition of playing
on the main European tour.
In second place was Teign Valley touring pro Sean Mason, who has
by his own high standards has had a poor season. Sean has been making
some major swing changes and he is only now getting comfortable over
the ball again. He is though, a quality golfer, and his round of
66 would have won on almost any other day. The swing now looks much
better , and he now only needs to recapture the confidence he played
with last season, to be back better than ever.
In third place was Paul Hendriksen who represents Fingle Glen, Paul
played most of his amateur golf as a member at Churston and regards
the club as home, his score of 68 just piped his brother Dan Hendricksen
, who is assistant pro at the club by one shot.Like Gill , Paul will
be trying to get through to the final Q School next month in Spain.
In the team event Chris Gill brought home the winning score of -13
just piping Andy Norman and his home club team. There was a remarkable
sequence in the popular nearest the pin prizes, with the team from
RND, which included two talented County Junior 14 yr olds, picking
up 3 out of the four on offer, nobody could remember when this last
happened , surely the most accurate team in the County !
Devon PGA Captain Iain Parker, thanked Churston Golf Club Captain
David Mitten, and Secretary Simon Bawden for staging the event, and
looked forward to returning next season.
