Parker's winning girls

On a beautifully bright but cool and breezy day, the Devon PGA hosted the first Pro-Am of the summer season. Organised superbly by Exeter Head Professional Gary Milne and his ladies club captain Chris Quantick.

This ladies only Pro-Am attracted over 30 teams and was a huge success with a great atmosphere both on the golf course and around the club house afterwards. Exeter was an ideal venue for this event, and the golf course although playing quite long was in its usual superb condition.

Winning professional score on the day was a fantastic course record score of 62 by Exeter Touring Professional Chris Gill. Amazingly his was not the only outstanding score as Robin Goodey from Teignmouth was unlucky to be pipped to first place with his score of 63 which would have won on any other day.

Chris was delighted with his great score and has been working really hard on improving his putting over the last few weeks. His long game is always superb but he feels as if he hasn't holed his share of ten to twenty feet putts over the last few seasons. A decision to return to a putting grip which he used as a youngster successfully proved to be the catalyst for a great putting round. He hit sixteen greens in regulation, missed only one fairway and took twenty four putts on the greens. He feels if he could bring his putting average down from 30 to 31 to around the 28 mark he could achieve his goal of a place on the main European Tour.

Robin who has regained some of his best form over the last few months puts the success down to a more relaxed attitude on the course and concentrating on maintaining his height through impact. He commented "Its pretty unusual to shoot 63 on a tough day and not win but it just shows the standard of golf being played in the county at the moment."

In a distant third was the ever popular Barry Austin whose 69 seemed like a good score until the other two players reached the clubhouse. Barry said "it was one of the most enjoyable Pro-Am's I've played in in the last few years and hopefully the event will become a regular fixture in the Devon PGA calendar."

In the team event Iain Parker from Royal North Devon won with a very strong team which included ladies county stars Julia Norman, Georgina Snow and the up and coming Lucy Greenberry. Iain commented "its the first time I have played in a Pro Am where my three amateur partners all had better looking golf swings than me."

Their team just pipped Mark Taylor from Exeter with his team from the home club. In third place on 8 under was the team led by Robin Goodey also with ladies from Exeter.

Several local companies and individuals sponsored the event which raised £2500 for the lady captains charity. The main sponsor on the day was Exeter Mercedes Benz whose managing director attended the evening presentation and helped with the prize giving.

Devon PGA Captain Iain Parker thanked everybody who had supported the event and thanked Gary Milne and Chris Quantick for putting together such a superb and well organised event.
