Twenty six teams played the Padbrook Park Pro Am this Tuesday, the
course as usual was in superb condition and the tight undulating
layout
proved to be a good test of golf on a bright and sunny day.
Two players tied on 69, the consistent Andy Norman from North Devon
and Jon Langmead, from Exminster. Both players were surprised to
win with what both considered modest returns, but their one under
par efforts were good enough to hold off their fellow Pro`s from
around the County. The tight pin positions, and sloping greens caught
out many players, and although Padbrook is relatively short, there
are dangerous holes where big numbers are possible.
Norman who has decided to concentrate his golf in the West Country
this season, feels he plays his best when in a relaxed mind set,
you could see that he was having fun on the course, he commented "when
you enjoy it you always play well, I have been putting too much pressure
on myself, so my goal from now on is enjoy my play"
Jon, Devon`s most consistent winner over the last twenty years is
now back on top of his game, he is busy with his work commitments,
as
Director of Golf at the thriving Exminster Golf Centre, but still
finds time to work on his game. He felt he left several shots out
on the course and his score could have been much lower, a sentiment
shared by many of his fellow Pro`s.
Tied in third place were Cliff Strange and Dominic Reahag. Cliff
is one of the steadiest players in the County and he never gives
up, his ability to keep positive and grind out a good score is legendry
among his fellow Pro`s.
Dominic, who perhaps could play more often, is never far from the
top of the leader board, his elegant swing and sound all round game
means he is always a threat. Many of his fellow Pro`s feel that if
he competed every week, his scoring would be even better.
The team Event was won by a home team, led by home Pro the `Evergreen`
Ross Troake. They won by two clear shots with a superb total of 15
under par.
Ross commented "Its great to be part of the set up at Padbrook,
the teaching facilities are so good, and the complex is going from
strength to strength"
The future indeed, looks very good for Padbrook, the new nine holes
are currently under construction and if everything goes to plan
will be open for play this time next year. The new holes look great,
using the natural contours of the gently rolling land, with mature
trees and a stream adding extra interest.
The course when complete will be a great test of golf and really
put Padbrook on the golfing `Map`.
Devon PGA Captain Iain Parker, Royal North Devon, thanked everybody
at the club for staging a great event, particularly Karey Rawlings
the clubs Director of Golf and Course Manager.
Course owner Gary Scargill and his wife Sue have done a great job
with Padbrook, and the new course will make a huge impact when complete.
Parker commented "We will be looking forward to getting here
next year for the challenge of the new course, and hopefully establish
a new course record"
