The Dartmouth Golf and Country Club Pro Am was played last Thursday in glorious
Devon sunshine, with only light winds on the day, this most challenging
of courses, presented an excellent examination of golf for the 40 teams,
who travelled from all corners of the County.
Winning Professional score on the day was a great 68 by the `hard working` Paul
Henriksen. Even after his excellent round he chose to spent a further two hours
working on his short game, and putting on the clubs practice area and putting
green. Paul commented `I love playing at Dartmouth as the course really challenges
you, every shot has to be committed to, and your whole game is tested.`
His shot of the day was a cut 4 wood round the corner from 253 yds on the testing
par five 4th, this hole is regarded as one of the most demanding in the West
Country and `wrecks` many cards. He took advantage of all the par fives and played
beautifully controlled golf for the rest of the round.
In second place with a great score of 69 was home Club Professional Rob Glazier,
it is never easy playing well in your own event, as the `Home Pro` has to organise
so much on the day, and carries the weight of expectation of all the members.
Rob who has had to overcome some recent injury problems, was delighted to prove
that he could master the tough Dartmouth layout.
Third and fourth places were filled by regular Devon winners, former West Region
No 1 Sean Mason who is working hard to regain top form, with a 70. And this seasons
Devon No 1, Barry Austin shot a 71, he had to recover brilliantly, after hitting
his opening tee shot out of bounds, and starting with a 6.
In the team event the `in form` Chris Gill brought home his team, in thirteen
under par, to just pip Barry Austin`s team on the back nine.
Robin Goodey on behalf of the Devon PGA thanked everybody who supported the days
event particularly main sponsors CCF and Lafarge.
Jamie Waugh, Managing Director at Dartmouth also thanked the greenkeeping team
who presented the course in superb condition.
