The Torquay Golf Cub Held their Centenary Pro Am last Wednesday
, the event had been rearranged from earlier in the year
as heavy rain and a storm made the course unplayable.
Unfortunately the weather was again unkind, and all but
the early starters had to contend with dreadful conditions
again, Head Pro Martin Ruth must feel he has run over a black
cat ! With the effort put in by many people, to host a top
class Pro Am, to again suffer one of the worst day`s of the
summer was really unlucky.
The Pro`s and Amatures who played are a very resilient bunch,
and the scoring on the day was nothing short of remarkable.
Winning Pro score on the day was a great 68 by the very much
`in form` Jon Bevan who was making a raid across the County
border from his base in Weymouth.
Jon who is one of the best Regional
Players in the UK has a remarkable record of having qualified
for three Open Championships
in a row, with so few places available to qualifiers in
the worlds biggest `Major` these days, his is a record, that
few will ever match. He will also again represent Britain
and Ireland against the US this month in Scotland, in the
Bi Annual, PGA Cup matches.
In second place was Devon`s No1 golfer and new West Region
No1 Chris Gill from Exeter. Chris played in the worst of
the conditions and his round was one of the best this year
in such dreadful playing conditions.
The golf course was in fantastic condition
and the greenkeeping team had pulled out all the stops
to have the greens running
so smooth and fast but with the wind gusting to 40 mph this
only added to the difficulty, thank goodness for the great
British summer!
The team event was won by the team from Stover, led by Jason
Fullard who spent some time as a teaching Pro at the club,
he and his team just piped new home club assistant Ben Hiscock
and his team of local members.
Ben joins his brother Tom at the club working under the
guidance of the vastly experienced Martin Ruth whose brother
and family were also in the prizes.
Martin thanked everybody at the club including club Captain
Mike Boxall and Secretary Tony Fensom for their support and
help on the day, and looked forward to next years event.
