The Downes Crediton Club staged their first Pro Am competition, and
the event proved a great success all round, the weather was kind and
the golf course was as usual in good condition . Head greenkeeper Terry
Clark and Club Manager Rob Goodey, worked hard with Club Professional
Barry Austin to make sure the day went well.
Winning score on the day was 67, 3 under par.
Three players hit top form on the day, and tied on that score, Ashley
Moon from Okehampton
started poorly but caught fire on the back nine, his shot of the day
was a 3 wood second from 265yds on the par 5 14th cut round some trees
which pitched and stopped 2ft from the pin for an eagle three.
Sean Mason who is playing some great golf, also scored 67, despite finding
out recently that he is diabetic, Sean had 5 birdies in a round which
could have been even better, he is having to look at his playing schedule
as he gets used to dealing with diabetes.
Home club Head Pro Barry Austin one of the most
prolific winners in Devon, is always a clear favourite round Crediton,
and so it proved,
he was solid all day, but made his score with three consecutive birdies
on 12th 13th and 14th. Barry has been in great form recently and combines
the role of a club professional with some impressive playing , which
is far from easy.
In the team event Exeter`s Gary Milne brought
home the winning score, with a remarkable total of 20 under par, two
of Gary's team are very
low handicap players and third member Fraser play's of 14 hcp all four
players used their power to set up some great birdies they won by 6 clear
shots from teams led by visitor Andy Beal from Salisbury and Sean Mason
.
Barry and Robin presented the prizes with Club Captain David Slee who
said how delighted the club were to get a Pro Am started, and looked
forward to making it an annual event.
