The Yelverton Golf Club held their annual Pro Am competition last Friday, organised superbly by Head Pro Tim McSherry, the event has grown over the years to become one of the best events in the County calendar.

The course as usual was in excellent condition and the weather was bright but with a strong breeze to keep Professionals thinking. Yelverton in a breeze is great test of shotmaking and therefore it was no surprise that course and distance specialist Barry Austin from Downs Crediton posted the best Professional score an excellent 2 under par 69.

Barry loves playing at the moorland course and has the two lowest rounds in the Clubs 100yr plus history to his name, a course record 60 set some years ago was nearly matched last season with a 61. There can be few professionals who can claim the best two rounds ever played at a golf course !

His shot of the day was on the 10th hole playing into the wind he punched a 6 iron to 2 ft for birdie to give his round some real impetus.

In second place on 70 was Churstons Paul Hendriksen who also likes playing at Yelverton having spent some time at the club as a member.

In the team competition China Fleet Professional Dominic Rehaag led his team of Bev Ruth, Nikki Gawman and George Gawman to victory on 14 under par they won by a shot from previous winners and locals, Derek Silk who was on fire, Martin Moon and Paul Hendy, their Pro Ashley Moon was dissapointed with his own game on a course where he started his Professional career but commented " On a bright day there is nowhere better to play than Yelverton, no matter how you play."

Club Captain Bill Hammett and Devon PGA secretary Sean Mason presented the prizes to a full clubhouse both praised the condition of the course and Bill who has been a long time supporter of the Devon Alliance commented that it was a real pleasure to have so many friends both Pro and Amatures playing on the day and supporting the event.

Sean thanked everybody at the club and looked forward to returning next season.
