The golf course was presented in superb condition
and playing from the white tees presented a suitably tough challenge
for Devon's leading Professionals. Thirty teams supported the event
from all over the county.
The winning professional score was a superb 69 from the ever consistent Jon
Langmead. Jon felt his chipping and short game, which he has been working
on recently, were much improved. All the players started from the 10th tee
and played the course back to front. Jon wedged to a foot on the first hole
his tenth for birdie. On the next hole he faced an extremely difficult pitch
from the back down slope in the fairway bunker and pulled off his shot of
the day a stunning sand wedge which spun back ten feet to rest stone dead
for another birdie. He continued to play solidly for the rest of the round
eventually signing for his three under par 69.
In second place on a score of 71 was Downes Crediton Pro Barry Austin. Barry
was happy with his all round game and was even happier to buy his fellow
professionals a drink at the bar after a superb hole in one on the third
hole. His 8 iron pitched ten feet left and behind the pin and spun back perfectly
for undoubtedly the shot of the day. Barry had four aces as an amateur, and
had one last year in the Match Play Championship.
In third place with a level par 72 was Hele Park's Touring Professional Chris
Gill. Chris who is playing a full season in the West Region, was also happy
with his overall game his only set backs coming with a couple of three putts.
All the Professionals were full of praise for this fabulous championship
golf course and the superb condition of the greens.
The winning team, from Whitsand Bay, was led by professional Jamie Doughan.
Team member Terry Farkins holed twice from bunkers a remarkable feat for
an amateur golfer. The team were delighted with their overall play and thanked
their professional for guiding them round the testing course.
Devon PGA Captain Ashley Moon (Okehampton) thanked everybody at Dartmouth
for a superb days golf and all the professionals look forward to next years
tournament.
