Winning Pro - Paul Hendriksen |
Eleven teams from Devon headed out to the Costa Brava in northern
Spain last week to compete in the 4th annual Devon County PGA Overseas Pro
Am. Despite playing the event in British style weather, with several showers
and gusting winds, some magnificent golf was played, not least by the individual
winner, Paul Hendriksen from Fingle Glen. Paul lead from start to finish,
opening with a sparkling 6-under par 66 at PGA Catalunya, containing 8 birdies
and an eagle.
He extended his lead the following day at Mas Nou GC, which recently held a ladies
European Tour event, by sharing the best round of the day there as well, alongside
Christian Vine, with both shooting a 2-under par round of 70 on the tricky mountain
top course.
Pre tournament favourite, Jon Langmead (Exminster) closed the gap to one shot
over the championship course at PGA Catalunya on day three, but in a spectacular
final day shootout, Hendriksen came out on top, maintaining his slender lead,
with Jon and he both shooting 4 under par 68's at Emporda GC. Paul's round was
all the more impressive, as he fought back from three early double bogies to
record another 8 birdies and an eagle for the second time during the week.
Devon Order of Merit winner, Chris Gill (Hele Park) shot up the leaderboard with
a final round of 66, to finish third.
In the team event, Jon Langmead lead home the trio of Andy Pascoe, Allan Matthews
and Russell Hailstone to record their third triumph in four years, as they won
comfortably from Hendriksen's team of Malcolm Jordain, Peter Morgan and Nick
Jackson.
The pre tournament texas scramble event at Emporda was won by the team of Duncan
Arnold (Hele Park) with amateurs Steve Bristow, Jon Axford and Ben Martin, shooting
a remarkable 16 under par gross score.
A further highlight of the week came on the Wednesday evening as most of the
competitors travelled to Barcelona to see England's footballers defeat Andorra
3-0 at the Olympic Stadium.
