Thirty two teams gathered from all over Devon to compete in the Yelverton Golf Club's annual Pro Am. The event has become a firm favourite with Pro's and amateurs alike.

The testing moorland course was, even after the recent poor weather, in superb condition.

Organised by head professional Tim McSherry, with sponsorship from many Plymouth based companies, the day was a huge success. The weather was kind and although the rain threatened several times during the day most players managed to complete their rounds without using their umbrellas, which was unusual in our current summer conditions.

Winning pro score on the day was James Langmead from Stover. One of the most underrated golfer's in the county, James has a fighting spirit and tenacity few professional's can match. After starting bogey, double bogey, he fought back superbly and remarkably scored two eagle three's on Yelverton's 8th and 11th par 5 holes. On the 8th his shot of the day was a superbly struck three wood from just short of the leat to six feet. James who doesn't get the opportunity to play much golf during the busy summer months
was delighted to have played so well on a course he enjoys. He commented "the course was in great condition and I've never seen Yelverton looking so green."

Tied in second place were a trio of pro's with experience and youth, Mark Taylor who has recently moved to Exeter is showing signs of becoming a really promising player and his 70 and second place was his best result so far in a Devon Pro AM. Big hitting Ashley Moon whose average drives exceed 300 yards could not convert many birdie opportunities and felt that his work on the greens could be improved.

Also tied in second place was Neil Holman who also brought in the winning team. Neil who has over the years helped develop many county standard players, knew he had a strong team when sixteen year old Leon Fricker playing off 5 handicap out drove him by fifty yards followed by brother Ryan who is 15 and plays off 4 who knocked it sixty yards past Neil!!! They combined superbly for a 19 under par total which was two better than the team led by Tavistock Professional Dominic Rehaag which also included former county champion Graham Ruth. Remarkably Neil's team started with two fours on the opening par three leaving the team two over par after one. Perhaps the juniors first tee nerves played a part. Neil quickly settled the youngsters down and they tore into the course for the rest of the round.

Devon PGA captain Ashley Moon thanked everybody at Yelverton who helped make the day a great success and looked forward to returning next season.
