The final winter Devon Medal was played at Exeter last Thursday
and in keeping with the season as a whole, the weather was again
challenging. Heavy rain made scoring difficult on the day, but
the course, as usual, was prepared in excellent condition.
Winning score on the day was an excellent 68 by the `in form`
Kevin Harper from Sidmouth, he has really made an impact in the
Devon
Medals this season, and now that he is studying for his PGA diploma
he will be competing in all the west region events this year.
Kevin commented "The Devon Medals have been great for me,
they keep you competitive through the winter months, and there
are some great players in
the County to test your game against." If he keeps up his great form this summer he is sure to make a
big impact in West Region golf this season.
In second spot on 69 was the OOM leader Barry Austin from Crediton,
he has played all the events this winter and as last season finished
in style to retain his No 1 spot as the best golfer in Devon.
Barry commented "With so many good players in the County
now it feels really good to hold on to my OOM title, it took
me a long time to win my first one,
so I will be doing my best next season to go for the `Hat Trick`"
Four players tied on 70 Chris Vine, home Pro Gary Milne making a rare appearance
in a medal, back to form Nick Cook, and new face Ben Hiscok from Torquay.
The Match Play draw followed the conclusion of play with the top 16 players
going head to head, it will be played
at Exeter next week with the semi and final the following week at the same
venue.
The trainee of the year trophy was won by Kevin Harper, and the Peter Ward trophy,
for the best assistant who displayed ability in all areas of the Professional
game, was deservedly won by the popular James Martin from Downes Crediton.
In the seniors OOM Cliff Strange just piped Neil Holman for the over 45`s title,
Cliff has studiously gone about his business this season, after some injury problems
and is really back to his best. He is a great example to every young Pro in the
County, his golf has been very consistent all winter and arguably his race against
Neil was one of the high points of the season.
With some great new talent emerging in the County and a host of proven winners
and experienced Pros still competitive, the Devon team which will be captained
by Robin Goodey looks to be very strong again this year. Two big tests await
the Devon Team, away to local rivals Cornwall and again, away to the powerful
Gloucester and Somerset PGAs . These matches are eagerly
anticipated
and with Devon the holders of both Trophies they will be looking for a strong
showing in both encounters.
Devon PGA Captain Robin Goodey thanked Exeter for supporting the Devon events
so well and presented the club with a cheque to help boost their junior funds.
