The
Devon Professionals staged their latest Medal competition at
one of their favourite courses last Thursday.
For the 35 players, it had seemed a very long time since they
last competed, this winter having been particularly tough on
everybody involved in the game of golf. The event at Yelverton
was snowed off, so the Countys leading golfers were eager
to get some competitive action in.
The golf course was in the best condition for many years and
was an even more enjoyable experience now that the greens
match the quality of the magnificent course. The weather on
the day was testing as usual, with a strong wind about `2 clubs`
and very cold temperatures, winter mitts were worn by most
players.
The scoring was superb though, the winner by 4 shot`s was Devon
No1 Barry Austin from Downes Crediton.
Barry had just returned from a belated Honeymoon in the southern
hemisphere, and was in relaxed mood with a sun tan that could
not have been picked up in Mid Devon!
He was so relaxed that he forgot half his clubs, so his 64
was a masterpiece of shotmaking, and flight control.
Barry commented " I sometimes think it`s easier with a
half set as you have to play more by feel and instinct." Perhaps
more players would benefit from playing winter golf with a
half set, or maybe you just need real talent. There
is no question in Devon which player has the most `Natural
Gifts` for the game.
Barry`s best shots were, he felt, in his wedge play, he hit
several 100yd to 120yd pitches in close, and took advantage
on the superb greens. He had 6 birdies in total, and a highlight
was a birdie 2 on the tough 210yd 7th hole where a controlled
3 iron, left him a ten foot chance which he holed.
Tied in second place were two player`s who have been in the
`doldrums` this winter Nick Cook, and Robin Goodey, who was
playing in his last Devon event as Secretary. Robin now starts
his year as Captain, an honour which is very much deserving
for all the years of work he has put in on the Professionals
behalf.
Both players jumped several places up the OOM which is really
shaping up to be a great season ending finish.
Robin thanked Teingmouth for hosting the event and presented
the home Pro Rob Selley with a cheque to help with their junior
development at the Club.
