The
Devon PGA met at a bitterly cold Warren Golf Club this Thursday,
for the 12th event in their Winter Order of Merit
Medals. This really has been a winter season to remember, for
some great golf, in some of the most challenging conditions.
25 player`s braved the elements, all player`s using winter
mitt`s and most with the latest `Under Armour` new style
thermal vest`s! The wind was about 3-4 clubs and with the
rock hard
ground and some winter greens, scoring was always going
to be difficult. Only those player`s who were committed
were likely
to bring home a decent score.
Best on the day was the back to form Nick Cook from Elfordleigh,
Nick is now well and truly `out of the doldrums` he felt
his best work on the day was on and around the greens.
He holed
several tricky putts of about 3 to 5 ft and combined with
his always accurate tee to green game, he came out on top
by 2 strokes.
Nick commented "It`s been a tough winter for us all,
but you just have to keep positive and try to do your best,
I can`t remember such a cold period in all my years in
the South West"
In second place on his own was the `vastly experienced` Neil
Holman, Neil is one of the grittiest competitors in the game
and relished the tough conditions. He now leads the race for
the Over 45`s OOM and is favourite in a three horse race which
includes Cliff Strange Torquay and Iain Parker RND, who finished
with a 72 and joint third on the day, with Devon PGA Captain
Robin Goodey.
In the overall OOM race, things could not be closer at
the top, with last seasons No1 Barry Austin just edging
in front
of Sean Mason and Chris Gill who both missed the event
with prior commitment`s. The race to make the Devon team,
to face
Cornwall and Gloucester and Somerset later in the season
also looks close, and with three events remaining everything
is
reaching a boiling point, if only we could say the same
about the weather!
Devon Captain Robin Goodey thanked Warren golf club for hosting
the event and presented the club with a cheque to boost their
junior fund`s.
