Monday 10th October saw the County’s
Professionals arrive at the breathtaking Bovey Castle for the 2011
Devon County 4 Ball Better Ball Championship.
On a tough day, with the wind gusting up to 30mph,
club selection was tricky and scoring was always going to be difficult
especially with the meandering River Bovey waiting for any errant
shot. As in the previous years though, two pairs were to come to
the fore and take up the challenge.
Dan Hendriksen (Churston) playing with older brother
Paul (Dinnaton) along with the pairing of Ashley Moon (Okehampton) & Iain
Parker (Royal North Devon) have shared the title over the previous
4 years but in 2011 it was the Hendriksens’ turn once more,
posting a 4 under par 66 for a one shot victory.
The brothers, whose round consisted of 6 birdies
and 2 bogies, always enjoy competing with each other and were quickly
into their stride with Paul making birdies on the 1st and the tough
par 5 fourth where drivers off the tee and the fairway left him
a straightforward chip and putt. Then Dan, making it back-to-back
victories in Devon PGA events, birdied the par 3 ninth, hitting
a 9 iron to 4 feet, before Paul added another on the par 5 tenth.
A couple of bogies set them

back but Dan, who has been driving consistently
in recent weeks, then drove the par 4 thirteenth to set up a two
putt birdie before Paul made their final gain on the 17th. A par
at the 18th ensured victory was theirs by the smallest of margins.
That one shot margin left Moon and Parker slightly
frustrated, feeling ‘too many bogies’ cancelled out
the birdies their attacking play always supplies, but both are
now already looking forward to 2012 to ‘take their title
back.’
Coming home in tied 3rd place were Tim McSherry
(Yelverton) with Laura Eastwood (Hele Park), along with Chris Gill
and Sean Mason (Exeter) both posting one under par 69’s.
At the presentation, Devon County PGA Captain
Rob Selley presented the prizes and thanked Bovey Castle and all
its staff for their hospitality and wonderful order of the golf
course.
