Devon
Professionals travelled to the coast and the historic Royal North
Devon Golf Club for the sixth medal of the season. RND was
probably one of only two courses in the county where the main greens
were in play despite the freezing conditions, and the firm ground
and difficult pin placements made scoring far from easy.
Paul Hendriksen (Dinnaton), a course specialist around the Northam
Links, having shot an 8 under par 64 last year, once again proved
his ability to improvise and shape shots by shooting an excellent
73 to take a two shot victory over Order of Merit leader Ashley
Moon (75). Hendriksen’s round consisted of 4 birdies and
five bogies and he felt the key to his success was the control
he had over the ball with his irons, especially with the pin positions,
leaving himself below the flag whenever possible. This win pushes
Hendriksen, the 2011 Order of Merit Winner, up to sixth in this
year’s standings.
Moon (Okehampton) whose 2nd place further extends his lead at
the top of the Order of Merit was pleased with his efforts ‘on
such a tricky day’. As always he struck the ball beautifully
from tee to green and but for some three putts from long distance
could have been a shot or two better.
In third place came Ben Martin (Torbay Driving Centre) with 76,
which moved him up to 7th in the Order of Merit followed by Christian
Vine (Axe Cliff) and James Pickard (Honiton) both scoring 77.
At the presentation, Devon PGA Secretary, Dan Hendriksen thanked
Royal North Devon Golf Club for their hospitality and Head Greenkeeper
Neil Crawley and his staff for the wonderful order of the golf
course.
