The Devon PGA OOM reached its conclusion this Thursday at Stover Golf Club. After an exciting and highly competitive season, full of fantastic golf and dramatic swings in fortune, Paul Hendriksen from Fingle Glen claimed top spot this season.

The season started at Okehampton Golf Club in October with a 63 from early OOM leader Andy Norman from North Devon. This seemed to set the tone for the rest of the events. Scoring was generally of a really high standard, and although the weather in at least seven of the twelve events was exceptionally testing, scores of 4, 5 and 6 under par were the norm for the winning players.

The strength and depth of the Devon Professional scene was evidenced by the number of times the lead changed at the head of the OOM with six different players holding number one spot during the winter. For the first time, six players scored over 100 points, and long gone are the days when one or two players could expect to win most of the events. There are now at least fifteen players who can win in any given event, and some of the most talented players can only commit to a handful of events due to work commitments.

Devon PGA Captain Iain Parker commented "we have a great club atmosphere amongst the pro's with everybody willing each other on, and to win the Devon OOM is almost more difficult that winning the West Region title."

Paul Hendriksen has shown a professionalism and determination to work on all aspects of his game that has impressed all of his peers. Along with winning the overall order of merit he also claims the award for leading trainee assistant in the rankings. He will be taking his final PGA exams to become fully qualified in two weeks time.

He has left no stone unturned in his efforts to make the most of his natural talent working hard in the gym, developing his mental and course strategy game, and working on improving his swing technique and short game skills. His long term goal is to fight his way to the European Tour and although this award might not be the biggest event he wins in his future career, it is none the less an important and significant indicator, that the talent to achieve his goals is there.

In second place in the rankings was the hard working `Pro's pro` Neil Holman from Torbay Driving Range. Neil is an example to all the younger players to keep searching for improvement in all areas of their game. Neil can be justifiably proud that he is able to compete very successfully against players with more power and time to work on their games. Neil has a putting green and short game area installed in his garden, and this is an area of his game which impresses every pro who plays with him.

In third place was Devon's `rising star` the talented Jody Bee from Exminster. Jody has moved his game onto another level this season and if he can improve his temperament under pressure, could well go on to realising his undoubted potential.

In fourth place was the "natural talent" that is Ashley Moon. Ashley is able to produce fantastic golf, peppered with brilliant shot making skills, without almost any practice. He rarely touches his clubs between events, which makes it all the more remarkable that he is always amongst the leading players each season.

Some of the West Region's very best players make up the next five spots with Andy Norman, Chris Gill, Sean Mason, Barry Austin and Robin Goodey filling those places. The team to play the Ryder Cup style match against Cornwall later in the season is indeed impressive, and it could be argued that Devon's leading players would be a match for any county in England.

The award for the highest ranked player over 45 yrs `The Seniors OOM` went to RND Head Pro Iain Parker, he was chased all the way by Cliff Strange Torquay who hopes to try for his European Seniors tour card at the end of the year.

In conclusion Devon PGA Captain Iain Parker said "its been very impressive to watch some great golf from the guys this season, and the hope is that one or more of our Devon players can break through to the very top of the professional game.
