The conditions were very tough for scoring, with the greens running
very well and extremely quick for this time of the year,
and the wind gusting
at 40mph getting the ball close and holing out proved a real challenge.
The two players who best mastered the conditions were Exeter`s West Region
champion Chris Gill and Elfordleigh`s consistent Nick Cook with level
par scores of 71.
Chris who has played some fantastic golf this season has continued to
impress with his tour standard game from tee to green. He hit sixteen
greens in regulation and felt that his score could have been better if
his holing out had matched his long game skills. His shot of the day
was a driver off the deck into the fierce wind on the par five 12th hole
to twenty feet to set up one of his three birdies on the day.
His playing partner on the day Nick Cook went head to head with Chris
and was hitting the ball equally impressively from tee to green. Nick
who is really enjoying being back among his fellow pro's in the Devon
PGA has found the consistency to produce good scores almost anywhere
he plays. He commented "the Devon PGA Events have been great for
me and have really kept my golf at a high level."
A reflection on the difficulty of the day was that the next best scores
were a pair of 74's from Plymouth Golf Centre's Nick Horrocks making
a rare appearance on the course and Neil Holman from Torbay Driving Range.
Nick who has been troubled with a knee injury from his days as a trainee
goalkeeper with Plymouth Argyle has not been able to play much golf this
season, but hopes to compete more regularly in the coming months. Neil
who has been playing very well recently puts his improved form down to
'skipping'. He feels he has really improved his fitness in the last three
months, all he has been doing is skipping each day for about 10 minutes,
he has noticed a difference in his stamina and strength during every
round he has played.
Devon PGA Captain Ashley Moon form Okehampton thanked the Tavistock head
Greenkeeper for presenting the course superbly and looked forward to
returning next season.
